About the Project

John Dos Passos Institute Narrative Identity Design

The John Dos Passos Institute is a community-powered learning and cultural hub dedicated to literacy, creativity, sustainability, and social justice.

Through adult literacy and ESOL classes, arts programming, career support, and community initiatives, the organization creates opportunities for learning, growth, and connection.

When developing the visual identity, we looked for a symbol that could capture both the Institute’s mission and its spirit: The Southern Bayberry.

Known for its resilience and adaptability, the Bayberry became a natural metaphor for lifelong learning, community strength, and the ability to thrive through change. It’s symbolism reflects the experiences of the people who learn, teach, and gather through the Institute’s programs.

The resulting identity is approachable, grounded, and hopeful: honouring John Dos Passos’ legacy while creating space for future generations of learners and changemakers.
